Essential Oil Safety 

Essential oils (EOs) are quite safe and most people have no issues incorporating oils into their lifestyle. When using oils, here are some safety guidelines to keep in mind. 

*Everybody and every body is different. EOs are powerful. Listen to your body and follow its lead.  

*If you have EOs in your home, it is highly recommended to research to learn how to use oils safely and effectively. Here are some links to DoTerra-recommended resources:

General Safety Guidelines:  

  1. Store EOs in a secure place away from children and pets. 

  2. Be aware that skin irritations are rare but if you have any kind of side effect, reduce the use of the oils or take a break as it’s most likely due to your body detoxing. 

  3. Read and follow all instructions carefully. 

  4. Always take precautions when using aromatherapy. START LOW AND GO SLOW! 

  5. Unless otherwise stated, never use EOs on your skin without first diluting with a carrier oil. A skin test is recommended prior to use. If you experience any soreness, redness or irritation do not use the blend.  

  6. If an EO (single oil or blend) gets into your eye, flush the eye immediately with a carrier oil or cold milk (NOT water). Seek medical attention if the stinging and/or irritation continues. 

  7. If you are allergic to certain foods, do not use EOs or carrier oils that come from those foods. 

  8. Be sure to consult your reference guide and health practitioner to learn which EOs should be avoided during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. 

  9. Do not use more than 2 drops of the following EOs when used in a bath the first time: Aniseed, Black pepper, Camphor (rectified), Citronella, Clove, Eucalyptus, Ginger, Juniper Berry, Peppermint, Sage, Spearmint, Thyme. 

  10. The following EOs should be avoided if you have epilepsy: Cajeput, Camphor, Eucalyptus, Fennel, Hyssop, Pennyroyal, Peppermint, Rosemary, Sage, Spike Lavender, Tansy, Thuja, Wormwood.
